How to Store Vintage Fur Without Crushing It

Vintage fur needs gentle storage more than constant fussing. The goal is to protect the shape, texture, and natural movement of the piece without flattening it, drying it out, or trapping it somewhere it cannot breathe.

Give it room to breathe

Avoid plastic garment bags and tight closets. Fur should hang with enough space around it so the fibers are not crushed. A breathable cotton garment bag is usually a better choice for storage.

Keep it away from heat and sun

Heat, direct sunlight, and dry air can make vintage fur brittle over time. Store it somewhere cool, shaded, and stable rather than near radiators, windows, or damp basements.

What you can do at home

After wearing it, use a soft horsehair brush to remove surface dust and help the fur settle back into place. For light odors, air it out in a cool, dry room. Avoid perfume, steam, and aggressive sprays. Fur holds onto more than you think.

Let professionals handle deep cleaning

Fur is not a fabric to experiment with at home. For lining issues, serious odors, dryness, tears, or deep cleaning, a professional who understands vintage fur is the safest route.

A simple rule of thumb

Treat vintage fur like a piece with memory. Give it space, keep it cool, and avoid anything that tries to force it back into newness. Preservation is the point.
