Tom Ford for Yves Saint Laurent Saint Tropez Bag | Vintage Y2K Runway Suede Ruff

An exceptional piece from Tom Ford’s final year at Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche, this vintage Saint Tropez hobo captures the sensual, slightly decadent glamour that defined his tenure at the house.

Dating to approximately 2004, the Saint Tropez is constructed in soft suede with dramatic tiers of raw-edge ruffles cascading across the body. The deliberately irregular layers give the bag movement and texture, transforming an otherwise relaxed hobo silhouette into something unmistakably Ford-era YSL. Documented Saint Tropez examples from Spring 2004 use the same ruffled construction, and surviving versions appear in suede, leather and calf-hair variations. 

This example is particularly beautiful in a muted camel/taupe-gold suede, a color that emphasizes the texture of the ruffles without overwhelming the design. Silver-tone hardware and the leather shoulder strap provide a cool contrast, while the small Yves Saint Laurent Paris plaque is almost unusually discreet for a bag with this much personality.

The Saint Tropez belongs to a fascinating moment in YSL history. Rather than relying on logos, Ford used tactile materials, provocative silhouettes and exaggerated details to make the bags recognizable.
